The Data Unchained Podcast is focused on making data a globally accessible resource. On this episode, Enveil CEO Ellison Anne Williams joined host Molly Presley for a conversation about:
✳️ Why it is critical to protect the usage of data;
✳️ The business challenges addressed by Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs); and
✳️ How (and where) PETs are helping organizations unlock data value across silos and boundaries.
From the episode:
"Data has three states from which all types of protections tooling is are derived. It's sitting at rest in the file system -- this is in the database, etc. It's in motion through the network, Data in Transit. Or, it's being used or processed. Privacy Enhancing Technologies serve to protect very uniquely the data when it's being used or processed.
How do you use your process data? Well, you're going to run a search or you're going to run an analytic over it. One of those two things. Analytics, to us, also include very buzzy things like AI or Machine Learning. Search is not nearly as sexy as AI/ML from an analytic perspective, but under the hood, it does power the world.
In order to get value, to get insights out of that data that's otherwise just sitting there at rest in the file system or in the database, you have to run a search over it. You have to run some kind of analytic over it to pull that out. That's where privacy enhancing technologies come in and protect that. They're completely complementary, they do not replace the technologies that are used to protect Data at Rest."
